Fremantle's woeful kicking in front of goal has handed a depleted Richmond a lifeline at Perth Optus Stadium, with the sides locked in a tight contest at half-time.

The Dockers, who have been one of the competition's most potent attacking teams through the opening rounds, have kicked a wasteful 3.9 to trail by a point at the main break — a return that will have coach Justin Longmuir tearing his hair out in the rooms.

Richmond, missing captain Tom Lynch, looked every bit the undermanned outfit in the opening stages, but have refused to lie down, with young forward Steely Green emerging as their chief danger with three goals to his name.

It was Green who levelled the scores with minutes to go in the second quarter, finishing coolly after a sharp Sam Lalor assist, to send a shock through a packed Perth Stadium crowd.

The home side's accuracy in front of goal has been nothing short of embarrassing. Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and others have all spurned opportunities that on another day would have the game well in hand.

Isaiah Dudley has been Fremantle's brightest spark, producing a stunning rundown tackle on Sam Banks that had the crowd on its feet, before converting himself to give the Dockers a brief buffer.

There was further concern for Richmond when Jasper Alger — Lynch's replacement in the ruck-forward role — was helped from the ground with what appeared to be a knee complaint, leaving the Tigers' forward stocks stretched to breaking point.

If the Dockers can find their radar after the break, the game is theirs for the taking. But Richmond has shown enough grit to suggest they won't be rolled without a fight.

At half-time: Fremantle 3.9 (27) Richmond 3.3 (21)
