Michael Angok (above) fled Bankstown Hospital on Wednesday morning after being transported there from Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, running off shortly after 9.30am.

Police from Bankstown Police Area Command were notified and attended the scene, deploying a significant array of specialist resources to establish a perimeter and search the surrounding area — including the SWM OSG, SCC Raptor unit, PolAir and the Dog unit.

A number of personal items belonging to Mr Angok were found discarded on Gallipoli Road during the search, but officers were unable to locate him.

The search is ongoing.

Mr Angok is described as being of African appearance, about 175cm to 180cm tall, of thin build with short black hair. He was last seen wearing a black hooded jumper, grey tracksuit pants and white Croc sandals.

He was sentenced to prison in 2014 after being convicted of sexual assault following allegations of involvement in a gang rape.

Authorities say Mr Angok previously resided in the Blacktown area and may use the public transport network to move around Sydney.

Police are urging anyone who spots Mr Angok not to approach him, but to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers website. All information is treated in strict confidence.
