The extraordinary incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday on board AirAsia flight D7809, which was scheduled to depart the Chinese city at 2am bound for the Malaysian capital.

Instead of taking off, the aircraft was forced to return to the bay after a Chinese woman's rising agitation led the captain to decide she could no longer remain in the flight.

Video of the meltdown has since exploded across social media, racking up thousands of views and a flood of commentary, almost all of it critical of the passenger's behaviour.

In the clips, the woman is seen berating a calm female ground crew member who knelt before her and patiently listened.

"Shouldn't a cabin crew on board an international flight be able to speak in Mandarin?" she demanded.

"If he can't even speak basic Mandarin, he doesn't deserve to be in the service industry."

After Chinese airport police boarded the aircraft, her tone oscillated wildly — at first declaring she would happily take another flight, before pivoting to demand compensation for her time and money.

"If you don't compensate me, then let this flight not take off," she said.

"Let me be very clear, I am from China."

The cabin crew member at the centre of the storm, Syafiq Jisma, later shared his own account of the incident on Instagram.

According to Syafiq, the woman had become visibly angry after her friend was reportedly unable to pass through immigration.

"I approached her and politely asked her to lower her voice, but she did not understand English," Syafiq said.

"Another passenger nearby helped translate."

The situation escalated further when the woman turned her anger on the helpful passenger, forcing Syafiq to physically step between the two of them.

The Chinese passenger reportedly challenged him directly and told him to go ahead and remove her from the flight.

The captain was informed and made the call to return to the bay.

AirAsia X general manager Benyamin Ismail confirmed the incident, saying local authorities had decided to offload the guest for safety reasons after she failed to comply with crew instructions.

The flight eventually departed and arrived safely in Kuala Lumpur about 90 minutes behind schedule.

Social media users were savage in their response.

Threads user Sanmah, whose comment drew more than 1,000 likes, pointed out the obvious: "It's an international flight. Of course they'd speak to passengers in English."
