The Australian Federal Police and Western Australia Police Force allege the man committed non-consensual sexual acts on the woman during a Singapore to Perth flight on Sunday, April 13.

The female passenger alerted airline staff during the flight and was moved to a different seat.

Cabin crew monitored the man for the remainder of the journey before notifying the AFP upon approach to Perth.

AFP officers met the aircraft on arrival at Perth Airport and escorted the man off the plane for questioning.

He has been charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of an act of indecency without consent, both applied under the Crimes (Aviation) Act.

The sexual intercourse charge carries a maximum penalty of 12 years' imprisonment, while each indecency count carries a maximum of seven years.

The AFP and WA Police Sex Assault Squad are jointly investigating the alleged incident.

AFP Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal said no criminal behaviour on aircraft or within Australian airports would be tolerated.

"Every passenger has the right to feel safe when travelling, especially when confined in an aircraft close to other passengers," Mr Brindal said.

"Anyone subjected to unwanted contact is encouraged to alert the authorities, be it airline staff, the AFP or airport security, as soon as it is safely possible to do so.

"No act of indecency on an aircraft or at an airport is appropriate, and any travellers who break the law will be dealt with swiftly."

The AFP is urging travellers to report any suspicious behaviour at airports.

Behaviours to report include taking photos of security cameras, screening or perimeter fencing, avoiding screening, leaving bags unattended, loitering, concealing identity or exhibiting erratic behaviour.

Suspicious activity can be reported to Airport Watch on 131 237.
